About Gables Farm Dogs and Cats Home
Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home (registered charity number 1127194) is a non-euthanasia rescue and rehoming centre that has been helping the region’s unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats since 1907. The charity was initially set up in 1907 by two sisters, Mrs E B Guard and Ms Agnes Grant. They cycled around Plymouth collecting stray cats and later moved on to helping dogs. The charity takes in and cares for up to 1000 dogs and cats every year. On a daily basis, they care for around 80 dogs and over 100 cats, which is a lot for their staff and volunteers to look after.
Most of the animals are rehomed within a few weeks but some dogs and cats stay in the charity’s care much longer than others. It can just be a case of being overlooked, disability, or appearance, but more commonly it is because they have specialised behavioural needs that a lot of people don’t have the time for or experience to cope with. Some dogs and cats have not been socialised when young so develop defensive and inappropriate behaviours towards strangers and other animals. Others have experienced a trauma, neglect or abuse in their past, which has knocked their confidence with people.
Gables Farm never puts a healthy animal to sleep and they never give up hope of finding them a new loving home, no matter how long it takes or how much it costs! It can take a long time to gain the trust of these animals to be able to rehabilitate them so they can start to enjoy life and look for a new home. The charity believes that there is a special someone out there for every dog and cat, it is just a case of finding them.
All of the animals cared for are health checked by a Vet, neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms before going to a new home. Dogs are also assessed by a qualified dog behaviourist to establish what sort of home they need. Gables Farm rehomes animals all over Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
